Washington D.C

I traveled to for the first time in 10 year since living in the United States of America. This was a family trip, triggered by Luis’ graduation from George Washington University. We traveled with the girls and as usual our entire extended family joined the trip as well. There was not enough time to see everything for sure. We stayed there for 3 days and it was just too short.

Smithsonian The National Museum of the American Indian

The highlight of my trip was to see this museum. It has one of the biggest and most relevant exhibits in America (the continent) of indigenous nations(Indigenous diaspora) information. It exceeded all my expectations. It is also featuring and special exhibit about the Incas called “The Great Inka Road”, which really touched my heart because this is very likely one of the people that are part of my ancestry.

I highly recommend anyone who is interested in indigenism to visit this museum, besides being very informational, it is a place full of amazing energy. It is a fantastic and magical place to bring your kids too. The museum includes history and exhibitions of most indigenous nations in the Americas. These exhibitions were curated by indigenous leaders and communities themselves!!

Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum

Luis is a nerd and since he indulges me in anything indigenous, I have to indulge him on everything related to engineering. Hence, this museum visit was just what the doctor ordered. Even though admission is free, it is filled with “theater” experiences for which visitors will need to purchase tickets for.

National Archives

Interested in historical documentation? Sign me up! In this building visitors will be able to find the document of the constitution. Which by the way I just learned was an “inspiration” from an Iroquois document. The founding fathers did not came up with it by themselves!

This place broke my heart in many ways since there is actual documentation of the nasty history of the United States regarding discrimination, racism & sexism. In a way it is good that all of this is documented. I do have the hope that we will evolve into reasoning beings and will look back at the last 500 years one day and mostly agree that it has been a constant evolution but also crazy years in which a lot of injustice has gone down.

Lincoln Memorial & National Mall

The weekend had beautiful weather to enjoy the National Mall & the Lincoln Memorial. The grand statue of Abraham Lincoln inspirational. There is great history about its conception and development at the site.

Adams Morgan

My friend Mauricio who is a very talented photographer, recommended eating ethiopian food. There is a large ethiopian community in Washington D.C. I love trying new foods and this was a great first. You eat it with your hands and the flavors are wonderful!

We went to Zenebech restaurant located in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. I asked the waiter to bring us a mix of everything good as the menu featured a lot of meat and vegetarian options with tibs at the end. We wanted to try it all! She was very sweet and kind to ask if we were into spicy food, which we love!

Here are some Pics of the dish we had.

Union Market

The market to visit in DC is Union Market. I will be very happy to learn if anyone else knows any other markets in this city. I will love to come back and report as I live for market foods! This market in particular is an upscale gentrified center with several food vendors set up in market fashions. Always a great option if you are looking for a diverse offering of options for eating drinking and enjoys snacks and dessert. It has a nice outdoor space with ping pong tables. Highly recommend this one for visitors since you can grab a quick bite and get on with your journey.
